Nestled in beautiful gardens in the North-western foothills of Kyoto stands the famous Golden Temple - Kinkaku-ji.
The Golden Pavilion, part of the Rokuon-ji Temple complex, was originally built in 1397 as a retirement villa for Yoshimitsu, the 3rd Shogun of Ashikaga. The elegant, harmonious building contrasts three styles of architecture. The first floor (Ho-sui-in) is built in the style of a palace. The second floor (Cho-on-do) is built in the style of a samurai house and the third floor (Kukkyo-cho) is built in the style of a Zen temple.
The second and third floors are covered in gold-leaf on Japanese lacquer and the roof, upon which a Chinese phoenix rests, is thatched with shingles.
